WHY YOUR BLOG ISN'T GROWING AND HOW TO FIX IT

November 08, 2017

Followers.  Page views.  Comments.  Likes.  Shares.  Five things we as bloggers yearn to have more and more of.  I am not an expert blogger.  I don't even have very many followers.  But in about two weeks my blog has gone from 0 followers to 51 (email, Blogspot and Bloglovin').  I've been extremely blessed to have many amazing bloggers help with a blog tour to start me off, which definitely helped direct traffic to my blog.  I also had some fabulous girls post on social media for me.  Virtual hugs for all of you!  While that helped tremendously, I do (mostly) know what I'm doing.

So, without further ado, here's an blogger's guide to growing your blog.

Interaction

Interaction, interaction, interaction.  Say it with me, "I-n-t-e-r-a-c-t-i-o-n."  There, got that grounded in your head?  Cool.  Now here's why interaction is so important.

Let's say someone comments on your post.  They say something super sweet and then, wow, they follow too!  At this point there is a 99.9% chance I would check out their blog.  See where I'm going?  When you comment it often directs traffic right to your blog.
But you need to keep this in mind.  Which comment would you be most likely to check into?

#1.  "Nice post.  I just started a blog and I want a ton of followers.  Will you pleeeaaasssseee follow my blog?"

#2.  "Wow, this post was really well written.  I can totally relate to (blank) because of (blank).  One of my favorite parts of (blank) are these.  Your blog is so pretty, I really admire your (blank) skills.  I'll definitely be following along and looking forward to your future posts!"

If I spent 3 hours on a post and someone commented with  #1, I'd be a little bugged.  How do I even know the person read my post?  A comment like #1 totally turns me off.

But comment #2 would brighten my day!  I'd be excited to talk with this reader and find out more about them.  I'd check out their blog and maybe even follow.

The point is, don't comment just to get comments.  Comment on posts you really, truly enjoyed reading.  Just like with real life.  Popular people are the ones who talk with EVERYONE.

Theme

It takes a little over 2 seconds for someone to decide whether or not they'll stay on your blog.  That's hardly enough time to even read your blog title.  Let alone a post.  Try to keep things simple, clean and pretty.  If your blog is cluttered, I'm going to leave pretty soon.
Here are 4 do-s and don't-s to keeping your posts and theme beautiful and clean.

Don't use too many gifs.  When a post has one every two sentences, I can't concentrate on the text.  A few is perfectly fine, even funny.  But too many is just distracting.

Do  have an easy to see followers gadget.  For anyone who's not sure what I'm talking about, it's the little thing on the right that says "Join The Fairy Squad".

Don't use the free templates that come with blogger.  You should definitely download one from a free site.  Such as this one here.

Do Break up long bits of text with pretty photos.  I try to only use mine, but sometimes I don't have any recent beauties and go with something from Unsplash.
Purpose

Every post you write should have a purpose.  Not just a purpose for you, such as "this is what I like to do."  Your followers will get bored fast with that sort of content.  You must give your readers a reason to read your posts.  Something they can gain, something to make them want more.  Abbiee is extremely good at this.  I learn something from her posts, which makes me super excited to read the next ones.

Social Media

On Sunday I posted a poll on Instagram to see what people would like to see me post next and you guys said you preferred to read a post on growing your blog.  This is sort of an example of both interacting and using social media to your advantage.  I let my readers have a say in what they want to read.

Since setting up an Instagram account I've had many more page views.  And let's be honest, Instagram is just fun.  You should try their rewind video thing.  It could keep me entertained for days.

I also have a Pinterest account.  Although it's more for personal use, not so much blogging, it's still a great thing to have.  Pinterest is actually my best friend.  I use it for everything.  So even if you aren't a blogger you would be wise to create one.

I just started a Bloglovn' account and somehow I already have 5 followers from there.  Wow, you are really on top of your game, guys.  <3

Don't pressure yourself to master all the social media outlets at once.  Start with one and work on it until you're happy.  Then move on to another.

Comment below if you'd like a tutorial on how to set up Pinterest and Instagram gadgets, because it took me forever and I don't want you amazing people to go through the same pain and frustration.

~ Ella Marie

Talk to Me

Does getting new followers give you a thrill or is that just me?  What's your favorite form of interaction?  Where did you get your theme from?  What's your favorite social media platform?  Would you like a tutorial for setting up gadgets?  Did you learn anything from this post?  Would you like to read more like it?  Isn't blogging totally awesome?

  4. This is a great post! I've been working on some of these very things, but you've given me a few more things to add to my list.

You've also answered a question that I've had for a while: blog design. I'll have to look into some templates. Do you have any suggestions about what to look for? I'd be happy with any advice you have!

    1. I'm so glad! Good for you! *high-fives*

Hmm. When you look at the templates go the live preview. If it seems hard to navigate, don't choose it. Try something with a simple design, in the long run they end up looking better. I'm sorry I don't have any better advice, but if you have any questions feel free to contact me!

    2. No, that's actually perfect! I prefer simple designs anyway. I'm not attracted to complex, hard to follow layouts. Thank you for your advice!

  7. I've been blogging for well over a year but I only two weeks ago got 51 followers. Obviously you DO know what you're doing! Go get 'em!

This post definitely made me think. Perhaps I need to de-clutter my blog. And I don't really have a specific purpose, I just kinda do what I feel like.

But yeah, this was a really good post! Thank you for sharing your insight and I hope your blog continues to flourish, I've enjoyed it VERY much! <3

  9. Great post idea Ella! You did such a great job of explaining the different aspects! I can tell you know what you're talking about! :) What you said about commenting on other blogs is SO TRUE. 75% percent of my followers are bloggers who's posts I commented on!

  11. Yes, this is all so true! I've been blogging for years, but I'm still learning new things about it all the time! Thanks especially for the link to the free layouts - I'm still using a blogger layout, and I think it shows. >_<

Another thing which I've heard (not speaking from experience because I'm really bad at this) attracts and keeps traffic is having good titles for posts - and you totally do that. Your titles promise something and practically beg us to keep reading. :) So good job with that too!

  13. *cries for eternity* I HAVE NO PURPOSE.

Kidding. I first started Madi Grace with the purpose of posting mini sermons, along with personal hobby stuff. But then people would never know what to expect; writing snippets or my failure to communicate the awesomeness of Jesus Christ over a blog post. I'm changing a lot of things up, but for the past few months I've been mulling over and realizing the fact that PEOPLE HAVE LEGIT NO REASON TO READ MY POSTS.

So as you can see, I have a lot of thinking to do in the area of my blog's stinking purpose. XD

Your post is so amazing and helpful! I love how you formatted it. And oh my goodness, yes -- too many gifs are so distracting and totally turn me away from a post.

  15. Ahhh, I love these tips!! Especially what you said about interaction. In my mind, THE whole point of being online is to have conversations - and you can't do that without interaction that goes beyond, "Nice post! Check out my blog?"

I'd say my favorite social media is a close race between Instagram and Twitter. Twitter is great for conversations, and Instagram is great for art. Pinterest is really more for inspiration.

More tutorial posts from you would be great! I use WordPress, so I may not be able to do the same things as you do on Blogger, but I always like seeing how other bloggers do things.

    cheers.

Cool! I haven't tried out Twitter, but I adore Instagram. Yeah, but that doesn't really stop me from being addicted. xP

Thanks for the input and the sweet comment! <3
