THE GIANT CAMP NANO CELEBRATION

by - April 28, 2018

WE MADE IT THROUGH CAMP NANO!*  Let us embrace the confetti, eat ice cream and celebrate!  I can hardly believe its over.  Tell me about your awesome novel in the comments, because I want to hear about it!

I've never done NaNo or Camp NaNo before, so starting out I was extremely nervous.  But you can hear all about that in another post, for now I want to tell you about my novel.  At the beginning of the month I was rather hush-hush about it.  Which meant I was able to surprise all you at the end (now) with my novel.

*If you haven't finished yet I'm here for you.  You can do it!

A Summer of Sunsets

My novel is about family, friendship, love and healing.  It's about being broken and being happy anyway.  It's about learning to trust and let go and be okay.  It's about living for the little things.  Living for the sunsets.

Also, I have an entire Pinterest board dedicated to this novel, but I was having trouble with the html codes, so all I have is a link.

The Characters

Meet the fabulous people I've been spending night and day with.  They really are quite a nice bunch.
Tessa

Logan

Taylor

Oliver

Nora

Obviously I do not have entire Pinterest boards dedicated to each of these characters.  Now that would be truly crazy.

The Playlist

I honestly listened to this playlist only once or twice during my writing process, but it's the thought that counts.  Really, I listened to every song on every playlist I have except this one.  I even created a playlist for the current story idea tormenting my brain and listened to that.

Snippets

“It doesn’t matter what that random guy said, right?”  I asked.  Taylor took a sharp left flinging me into Allison’s lap.  She helped me to my seat, but I didn’t have time to buckle before Taylor swerved again.
“Okay.  That’s enough,” Levi told her, his voice turning from scared to authoritative.  He started to reach for the steering wheal.
Taylor smacked his hand off.  “Since when do you get to tell me what to do?”
Levi didn’t have time to be hurt before he started yelling, “Stop, stop!”
There was a stoplight right in front of us.  She wouldn’t have time to stop at this speed.
I screamed.

Three years ago Taylor and I had made up a system for sorting boys.
Type A: The flirt.
Type B: The one you watch out for.
Type C:  The ugly ones.
Sometimes it could be difficult to tell which one someone was, but with Oliver there was no doubt in my mind.  He was a type A: The flirt.  And he knew it too.
All she said was, “Mm.”  But what she meant was, “Tessa, I am not in the mood to talk to you right now about anything that isn’t important.  I need time to collect my thoughts and wasting words on things that don’t matter will do literally nothing for you in the long run of life.  So please either shut up or leave.”  It was her way of alerting me that her Sister Mode was officially off.

Finally it came loose, but I was losing time.  I could hear a few shouts and laughter coming from the direction of the trees.  I balled the handkerchief in my hand and dug my toes into the ground.  It felt odd to be running straight for the place where the people who could tag me were.  Almost as if I was running toward danger, in order to get away from it.  Isn’t that what I was always doing-what everyone was doing?  Running from danger, from fear and open, exposed spaces?
Logan had lead me into a moonlit meadow.  Fireflies mixed with stars until you couldn’t tell where the sky stopped and the swaying grasses began.  I stepped forward and looked down in surprise.  The long, wisps of grass reached my waist.  Turning in circles I ran to the center of the plane.  On either side we were walled in by rocks, but instead of feeling trapped I felt an exhilarating freedom.

TALK TO ME
How has Camp treated you this time around?  What is YOUR amazing novel about?  Tell me all the juicy details in the comments below.  Which of my characters looks most interesting?  Which is your favorite snippet?  Did you reach your word count goal?

  3. AHHHHH ELLA THIS POST IS FANTASTIC!

Oliver seems like a very interesting character... I look forward to reading this one day!!! And I agree with Abbiee: “Fireflies mixed with stars until you couldn’t tell where the sky stopped and the swaying grasses began.” DEFINITELY my favorite snippet!!

Camp was not so good to me this time around. I just had so much going on. But I managed to get to about 10k, and get past what I would’ve considered the hard part. So. All things considered, it went alright. I do hope to get more done next month, though.

Great job, Ella!!! That’s so awesome that you finished your first draft!

Hahaha, he might just be my favorite. But sshhh, don't tell my other characters. They'd be very hurt. I love that one too! Sometimes little sentences come to me like that. I actually came up with that one weeks before I started writing the first draft.

Aww, but hey, something is better than nothing, right?

  9. ASDFGHJK I AM SERIOUSLY SO IN LOVE WITH YOUR BOOK, ELLA!!! <3 I absolutely devour these types of posts because thEY ALWAYS INSPIRE ME TO WRITE. <3-<3 And those aesthetics? GORGEOUS. I am specifically in love with Tessa's and Logan's. ;)

Congrats on Camp NaNo! It was my first year as well and I ended up writing twice the amount of my original goal... Which wasn't a lot but it was more than I intended, so that's good. :} And I do the exact same thing with my playlists. I try to listen to them while writing and I do, usually, but sometimes I lean away from it and listen to other songs that aren't even on the playlist. XD

Anywho. I loved this post and I hope I will be able to read this book soon. ;)

p.s. I already know what I am going to write for Camp NaNo in July and I am soooo excited. It definitely has a somewhat similar vibe to your book. ^-^

    1. SAME! I love these posts the most of all, so I was THRILLED to be the person writing one. All of the yellow in Tessa's reminded me of you;)

I literally did the same thing! I started out with a goal of 20k, but after pumping out 4k in the first day I bumped my goal up to 40k. Ughhh, I'm so glad to hear I'm not the only one with the playlist problems!

p.s You should tell me about ahead of time so I can be pumped with you! ;)
