MY EVENING ROUTINE FOR A BETTER NIGHTS SLEEP

by - April 21, 2018

Since I was little I've had trouble sleeping at night.  I would lay for hours, staring at the ceiling and waiting for morning.  Then the next day I'd be exhausted.  I always looked forward to some rest, but the same thing would happen the next night.  And the next and the next.

Does this sound like you?  Do you want a better nightly routine to help you sleep well?

Then read on!

Pin me!

When you're having trouble sleeping there are many things you can do.  The most simple being having a good evening/night routine.  When you do the exact same thing every night before going to bed your body realizes, "Oh, it's time to sleep now."

Here is my evening routine in 8 easy steps.  You can easily switch around the order or tasks, or follow it word for word.  The point is, this is about you.

No Screens | 1

The very first step is to put your screens away!  I used to think they didn't affect me, but lately I've been careful to give myself at least a half hour before bed without them and my sleep has improved greatly.

Contacts | 2

To start off the actual routine I take out my contacts.  If you don't wear them you can obviously skip this step.  If you'd like to see a whole post about my contacts, tips and trick for them, ect. please comment below.  I know before I got them I had so many questions, but had trouble finding answers.

Relax in the Tub | 3

I love taking my showers at night.  There is NOTHING more relaxing than a hot bath with some Epsom salt.  I don't take showers every night, so if you aren't go ahead and skip to step 3.

Skin Care | 4

Next step is to remove any makeup I have on.  I usually wear makeup, so this step is crucial.  Then I wash my face, tone and mosturize.  A few nights every week I'll slap on a face mask or do a quick scrub as well.  It all depends on how much time I have.  Keep an eye out for a skincare routine post coming soon!

The Extras | 5

Next a brush my teeth, brush my hair, blow dry it and any other things I need to catch up.  E.g. nail care or teeth whitening.

Stretch | 6

After wrapping myself in comfortable, pajamas and loosening up with a warm bath/shower I like to stretch.  Stretching has so many benefits, not limited to better sleep.  When I stretch I notice a substantial difference in the speed of falling asleep.

Get Cozy | 7

Now I actually hop in bed.  I'm a sucker for having extra weight on my bed - even in summer - so I usually pile on a few extra blankets.  I love grabbing a book (I'm currently reading this one to my little sister), and just chilling for a bit.

Bible Study | 8

I used to always do my bible study in the morning, but recently switched to the evening.  After reading it I'll choose a favorite verse and repeat it to myself a few times.  I've found reading my bible right before I go to sleep helps clear my mind and refresh my soul.

That's it!  It's simple and sweet, which I think makes it better.  I hate the struggle of having to remember what to do when, but this schedule is easy enough that I hardly have to think.  I hope you have many good nights sleep in your near future.
Do you like my new theme?  I'm absolutely in love with it.  Do you have trouble sleeping at night?  What's your favorite way to wind down after a long day?  Bath or showers?  I think I'd say both.  Comment below and tell me your thoughts!

  9. Lovely new theme!

I use Lavender essential oil before bed to promote restful sleep. It's great to use in an epsom salt bath, like you said! I also try to remember to wash my face before bed also XD!

    1. Ooh, I have lavender oil in my face wash and I literally love the smell so much. Yeah, there is nothing more relaxing than a hot, epsom salt bath. Haha, same! Especially if I was wearing makeup that day. Thanks for commenting, Zella!

  10. I love your routine!!! Mine is not as fancy...just a simple brush teeth/hair, wash face, do pushups, get in PJs, read the Bible with family, read for 10 minutes, draft or edit for 30, then turn out lights and listen to music before falling asleep. (Showers on running nights, or any other day where I've done sweaty work, like fence maintenance.)

I haven't looked into screens causing problems with sleep. Honestly, I sleep like a rock (maybe because I'm running around in my job all day, and by the time it's bed time, I'm ready to crash?). I'll be typing on my laptop, then turn it off, and be asleep ten minutes later. Maybe the music helps? Or maybe just because I've been writing right before bed for at least five years?

(Is that your bed in the picture? The sheets are so pretty!!!)

    1. It sounds like you've got your routine down to a T! I definitely change my routine up every now and then, but yours sounds really nice!

LOL, I am SO not a heavy sleeper. Even my sister breathing can keep me up at night. Even on nights when I'm exhausted I still end up laying there for a least a little while. My sister's the exact opposite, though. She's asleep within seconds of laying down.

Yes, it is! Aww, thanks, but it's actually the reverse side of my comforter. xD

  11. Nice tips! I find that listening to sometime (say Adventures in Odyssey) helps lull me to sleep.

    1. Thank you, Gaby! I love to hear some sort of noise too, but music tends to keep me up and I'd be way to invested in a story as well. XD I do oddly love the sound of the dishwasher, though. So most of the time we run it at night.

    2. Gabby: Adventures is Odyssey!! I've listen those for so long (the older I get, the more I love them), but I don't meet very many people who listen to it.

    1. Hi Christina!
Oh no! Poor you! I will definitely think of doing a post about them. The first few days I had them they were so hard to take in and out. But I looked up videos about it and I strangely helped a lot.

  13. Hey there Ella! I just found your blog through Snapper's blog role. Your blog theme/mood is so CUTE! I love it!

Sleep is more important than a lot of (younger) people give it credit I feel. It can be really hard to follow step 1! Ahh, and I can totally agree with step 6. As an artist, I find it relaxing to break out the pencils and sketchpad and draw something before I sleep. Great tips!

I agree. Sleep can help in so many ways. Ugh, that's definitively the one that's hardest to follow. That does sound relaxing! Thank you for commenting! <3

  14. You have no idea how much I need this RIGHT now! My sleep is all over the place. I'm working extra shifts at the moment and sleep has just gone out that window. I might have to adopt some of your suggestions. It's high time my night routine got looked at.
Currently I'm really lazy. Just take my medication, brush teeth, wash face, change, hop into bed and attempt sleep.
Definitely giving at least a couple of these a try.
