When I think of summer I think of making new goals and better habits.  But one thing I've always struggled with was putting in the effort to actually make those dreams a reality.

Recently I've found myself sitting around quite a bit, even though I have long lists of things I want to do this summer, I just haven't found the motivation to get it done.  I've been being lazy and that is not the life I want to live.  I mean, even self care should be productive.

And that's why I'm making this blog post for you, and for me.  Because one of the best ways to learn something is to write about it, am I right?

A few days ago I asked you guys on Instagram what sort of blog posts you'd like to read.  I'm hoping to get to more of your ideas, but today I thought I'd start with one of Riley's.

Set Goals

Summer goals can vary dramatically.  From learning to do a handstand to creating your own brand, you've got this.

I like to divide my goals into four categories.

Physical | Spiritual | Relational | Personal

Each category is important for your daily life.  I have quite a few goals, so you can copy some of mine, or make up your own.

Physical Goals

.  Get all three splits 
.  Learn to do a handstand 
.  Learn to enjoy working out
.  Get in physical activity more often
.  Maintain clear skin

Spiritual Goals 

.  Read my bible daily
.  Incorporate praise into my music choices
.  Practice gratitude 
.  Take weekly fasts from social media

Relational Goals

.  Practice patience 
.  Practice understanding
.  Walk in love
.  Practice being less judgmental

Personal Goals

. Grow my blog
.  Launch my new secret project
.  Improve my art skills
.  Grow my social media
.  Get my driver's permit
.  Edit A Summer of Sunsets
.  Start writing new novel

 Always remember, your goals are important.  Never belittle them no matter how small they might seem.  Accomplishing them is what helps to shape you into a better person.

Create a Schedule

Summer days can often feel endless but believe me they most definitely end - and all too soon.  Instead of toiling away your free hours, get into the habit of working toward your goals on a daily bias.

My favorite way to do this is by creating a habit tracker or schedule.  The pure feeling of accomplishment from making a check mark is enough to keep me on track.  Obviously, if you have lots of goals you won't be able to put in a lot of time to each one every day.  Which is why it's good to break it down.

Choose which days work best for the activities and then promise yourself you'll actually stick to.  I'm the sort of person who makes a detailed routine, and yet never follows through.  I like spontaneity when it comes to everything and having the dull task of sticking to a schedule will bore me to death.  Which is one reason I love changing activities depending on the day of the week.

For instance, I work towards my fitness goal by doing yoga on Monday, then on Tuesday I do my stretching routine.  Then Wednesday I get in some cardio and so on.

I'm trying to get into the habit on not using any social media on Sundays and also as a “rest” day.  Which is why I only put 6 days on the schedule.  I think it would be so nice to give myself a complete break from everything for just a day every week.

Plan Some Excitement

It's S U M M E R, literally the time to have fun.  Do not squander your youth on being responsible.  I mean, being responsible is a really great thing.  But in 60 years not one of your grand kids will want to hear about how you did math all summer - just saying. 

I've found recently that I'm very unmotivated when I have nothing to look forward to.  Of course, there's always ice cream at the end of the day, but I need a social event to keep me exited.

At first, I felt bad for feeling like that.  I mean, I am all about loving the simple and embracing the mundane.  But when I really thought about it, there's nothing wrong with wanting to do something exciting.

So I'm planning to make it a goal to have something to look forward to every week.  Obviously, people don't invite me to things that often, so I'm hoping to have a couple people over to swim or reach out to friends for coffee.  The point is, fun doesn't always come find you, you have to make it!

Ideas for fun with friends

. Plan a photo shoot with your friend/s
.  Ask someone out for coffee.
.  Have friends over to swim or chill in general
.  Plan a hiking trip
.  Throw a spa party
.  Start a book club
. Host a dance*

*I just went swing dancing on Tuesday and it was actually the best ever.  There’s nothing better than dancing. 

Stick with It

This is THE very hardest part.  As I’ve mentioned, I’m a very spontaneous person, which means I have a hard time doing the same thing in the exact same order.  Of course, I’ve taken precautions to keep myself interested.  But at the end of the day you still have to make yourself get the things done. 

Five ways to make it easier to keep going

1.     Reward yourself.
Rewards can include but are not limited to...
.  Ice cream when you finish
.  Art session
.  Relaxing bath
.  Favorite show/movie

2.     Take breaks.
Just a five minute break to get your blood pumping can do wonderers for your productivity.  Moving around can literally make your brain more alert.

3.     Knock out the hardest task in the morning.
I’ve found that when I’ve done the “worst” task at the beginning of the day I feel so much freer and motivated to get more things done.

4.     Refocus your goals.
Look at your goals whenever you feel down.  Why did you make those goals?  What was your original motive?  How did you feel thinking about accomplishing them?

5.     Play music.
There is nothing better than jamming to your favorite tunes.  Just don’t play showtunes, because you’ll want to act them out.  But other than that music is so motivating.

Wrapping it Up

This method won't work for everyone and I'm still getting into the groove of it myself.  But don't be afraid to change up your schedule depending on how you're doing.  If you simply don't have the energy to write a blog post on your scheduled "blogging" day, then give it a rest.

That's one reason why this one works well for me.  I don't have to do any of the tasks at a certain time.  I can do it in the morning, afternoon or late at night like a crazy cat lady.  The point is, it changes daily depending on my mood.

One last thing; have fun!  It’s summer, after all.  So, stay up late and have some adventures.  And remember, it's never too late to start becoming the person you want to be.
